Nice condition on this New Model M1859, Civil War, Sharps Carbine used by Union cavalry units during the war. Standard Sharps carbine in .52 Cal. Perucssion with no patchbox on backstock. Matching Serial nos. 48854 on tang & bottom of the barrel. Barrel mkd: Sharps Rifle Manuf Co Hartford, Conn. in three lines & near the breech New Model 1859. Date is hard to read, as I thought this was a M1863 until I got a loop & could see the 1859. Lockplate is mkd: C Sharps Pat. Oct 5th 1852 & RS Lawrence Pat April 12th 1859. Left side of breech mkd: C Sharps Pat Sept. 12th 1848. Rear adjustable rear sight is mkd: RS Lawrence Patented Feb. 15th 1859.  Breechblock has also clear markings. Wood stock in good used condition with saddle rub wear on left side of backstock & has two gov't inspectors cartouches under sling bar & ring.  All metal is smooth & has nice patina. traces of blueing intact on some protected areas. Sling bar plate has Gov't inspector mk EPR. Some blueing intact on the top of the sharps pellet priming area. Small area behind the lockplate on the wood has worn off but is hardly noticeable. Action works excellent on this CW Sharps & the butt plate has the indent for the patchbox. This sharps has pretty good rifling intact. A really nice example of the popular, by cavalrymen, Sharps M1859 Carbine.
