Confederate Memphis Novelty Works, Thomas Leech & Co. Enlisted Mans Sword/Scabbard
Nice example of the rarer Memphis Novelty Works enlisted mans cavalry sword. These swords were made by Thomas Leech & Co. in Memphis, Tn. This Memphis sword is nearly 35" long with hammered blade which has great dark grey patina with unstopped fuller. The branched brass guard has a great mellow patina with the Memphis flat bottom on guard. On the front of guard is marked with Memphi Novelty Work which has the s in Memphis worn off & the s at the back of works has worn off. The rest of the Memphis Novelty works is clear. Thos Leech & Co. is clear. This is more than you mostly see the address on these swords. Grip looks covered in oil cloth & twisted brass wire. Scabbard in great condition with brass mounts & throat. Nice lap seam on back of scabbard with lead seal. Scabbard was probably painted black originally & still has some of the black intact. A really desirable Memphis Novelty Works Cavalry Sword & scabbard.
