Possible Gov't contract Horstmann M1840 Heavy Cavalry sword & scabbard in really nice condition. The sword guard has the knucklebow flared out from the guard towards the pommel. American made blade with inspector's W on ricasso of blade. American made scabbard with a non straight seam but wavy line downwards. Scabbard has a lead soldered throat & has the Philadelphia style drag. The guard has thinner branches than a normal M1840 Heavy cavalry sword & the blade has slight rounding. Blade is smooth with the Horstmann's Phila. markings. Blade has nice mellow gray patina & you can still see the cross graining in front of the ricasso. The brass guard & pommel has a great mellow patina & wood grip has all the original leather wrap & twisted wire. Peening has never been disturbed. Steel Scabbard has no dents & has the wavy seam soldered down the to the large Philadaphia style drag. The throat is lead soldered.
