Original Kentucky Flintlock Long Rifle by Joseph Clippinger Pennsylvania & Ohio Gun Maker
Very Nice example of an original Ky/Pa Flintlock Long Rifle. Rifle is in nice condition with a couple of nominal small cracks in stock. Beautiful tiger striped full wood stock with a nice 4 piece patch box. This long rifle is 51 1/2" long overall with a 37 1/2" Oct. barrel. Barrel has great dark brown patina with a single rear sight & a low front sight & has clear J Clippinger on top. Barrel is in .45 to .50 cal. Etched flat lock plate has London Warranted inscribed. Action on this rifle is very good d& has never been converted to percussion. Double set triggers & nice brass trigger guard. Wood stock has brass thimbles & brass plate on bottom of forearm. Very nice patina on the 4 piece patch box with lock. Brass side plate & back stock has a German silver oval plate at cheek rest. Back stock has swirly carvings on left side. Nice patina on the brass butt plate. Wood ramrod may very well be original to this rifle with used brass top & bottom. Joseph Clippinger was born in Pa. & he was influenced & taught by some of his extended family of gunsmiths Kuntz-Newhard-Moll. Joseph apprenticeships from around 1812-1820. Joseph done well making the guns & later moved to Ohio where he still made rifles. A nice original flintlock Ky/Pa Long rifle with makers name
