One of three Confederate Breech-Loading cannons still around. One original cannon & two exact copies of the cannon made by an expert machinist some years back. Machinist mike his cannons from the only original one left. The original Hughes cannon were manufactured by Street, Hungerford & Co. Memphis, Tn in 1861. They tested these guns & were able to fire up to 3 miles & could be fired 6-8 times a minute because of the copper jacket over the barrel which was filled over & over with water. Cannon had 1.5" bore & was breech loaded & used a nipple in the barrel with a larger hammer. Placing a cap on the nipple & pulling the line on the hammer the cannon was fired. This gun is the first cannon the machinist made from the miking of the original. It is marked No.1 on the barrel. The cannon is 6' long & 3' 9" wide. Wood wheels are 30!/@" tall. The two boxes are 17 1/2"L X 10 5/8"w X 10 5/8" d. Cannon has a elevator wheel which raises & lowers the barrel. Copper sleeve on barrel is 24"L with hole for filling water. There is a 4' Cleaning brush & swab attach to carriage. Grease bucket. The wood boxes have bullet mold, powder measurer, percussion caps, gimlet, hammer, wrench, bag of primers, another gimlet, 2 T screws & 2 7" rd rods. Also antique lock with keys. The other Hughes copy is in a museum up north. This cannon is shown on the internet firing. Just look up Hughes Confederate cannon. Cannon is in great fire able condition.
